My name is Micki Zartman and I am a volunteer project coordinator for the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute in Ohio. The project is sponsored by the International Programs through the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the Ohio State University. I have worked with home school organizations through the Waterman Dairy Farm tour program and the Scarlet and Gray Ag Day program at the university. Working with parents who highly value their children's future and who are willing to invest of them selves in providing a quality education grounded in their beliefs has been a very inspiring experience for me. I would like to share information about the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute Program and invite your members to participate. There is no other program for high school students and teachers like the youth institute in Des Moines, Iowa. Could you please give me a phone number and the name of an individual who would be able to help me get this information out to your membership?
We will be selecting our 6 delegates to represent Ohio in September. Students who are interested in participating will write a paper to be submitted by September 11, 2005. All students (and their faculty mentor, a teacher/parent) who write a paper will be invited to attend a food science conference at Ohio State University on September 21. They will engage in a hands-on science lab, attend a agricultural bio-terrorism presentation, attend career presentations in the college of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the International Programs, and attend a cultural and arts reception where the students with the top scores on their paper and interview will be announced as delegates to the World Food Prize International Symposium in Iowa in Oct. For further information about the program, please go to http://cfaes.osu.edu/science/teachers/oncampusexperiences.html and select 'educators letter' for more details and dates about all the events related to the program. To view the topic for the paper the student will write, go to 'Paper Topic', Paper Specifications' and 'Paper Resources'. Also, if you go to www.worldfoodprize.org and go to Youth institute, you will be able to pull up copies of last years’ delegates from Ohio. The deadline dates on the educator's letter will be extended for your parents and students if they are interested in attending. If one of your parents and their child or children is selected, their registration fee of $250.00, the hotel expenses, and most of the meals in Iowa will be funded through the generosity of the Ruan Foundation. Please help me distribute this valuable information to your membership. An additional benefit to the delegates is the opportunity to apply for an all expense paid internship to an international country at a leading research institute. Students strong in science will find this experience life-changing and some of the papers written about their research projects are amazing. They will work with world-renowned scientists in their labs. Norman Borlaug, who is a Nobel laureate credited with saving million of lives with his research on wheat, established the WFP.
I can be reached at mzartman@wideopenwest.com or 1-614-431-3479 or 1-614-309-2184. The fax number is 1-614-292-7116. I look forward to hearing from you. I am available to meet with you or parents and students and I have a wonderful video of the students who have participated in the past.
Sincerely,
Micki Zartman
